This photo guide started in 2008 as a result of field work on West African plant diversity performed within the projects BIOTA, SUN and UNDESERT and has been continuously updated since. Many photographers have contributed their photos to further improve scope and functionality. So, we could expand the geographical scope to cover Central and East Africa in 2010 and the entire African continent in 2014. With an improved version being launched on a new platform in 2026, Macaronesia and Madagascar have also been included.

The technical implementation of the new platform was realized by the IT staff of the Senckenberg Society of Nature Research (Biodiversity Informatics and IT Services). Graphics and design were created by Christine Friedrich-Leye.
